Comforting Chemotherapy Patients One Blanket at a Time
Who we are: Layers of Love was born because of a simple need.
Chemotherapy patients suffer a terrible side effect of treatment. Being susceptible to cold.
So we are hoping, with your help, we can make a difference for these patients going through chemotherapy.
What we do: For over 2 years we have been on a mission is to donate homemade fleece tied blankets to chemotherapy patients both children and adults. This year we are on track to have donated well over 500 blankets to both infusion centers all over the United States and privately requested blankets to all over both the United States and Canada. Layers of Love could not continue on our mission without the help of individuals and community groups and their generosity.
How we help: We collect brand new fleece blankets for both adult and pediatric chemotherapy patients. Currently we are donating all our pediatric sized blankets to two wonderful organizations - Chai Lifeline and The Isiah Alonso Foundation. We have donated adult sized blankets to Sloan Kettering in NYC, Miami Children's Hospital, MD Anderson, Cooper Cancer Institute and The Lehigh Health Network among many other infusion centers. We also receive many privately requested blankets and we are proud to say because of the many generous blanket donations we have received we have never turned down a private request for a blanket.
How you can help: We have set up FAQ and Guidelines tab at the top of the page to make your donation of a blanket as easy as possible, no matter if you plan on making your own fleece tied blanket or if you are purchasing a kit.
Be sure to check out our blog, there we have the link to Jo-Ann’s Fabric and Craft store. Of course you can purchase your kits and fleece, and chose whatever pattern you want, all from the store of your choice, we have just provided these links for convenience.
How your community group can help: A community group is any group that comes together in your community. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Senior groups, senior projects, high school groups, church youth groups, etc. We have been closely involved in several community projects that were completed for Layers of Love and one very BIG underlying sentiment is always present with every occasion: friendship, conversation, collaboration and accomplishment. There is something magical that happens when several people are gathered around the same blanket working together to complete it. During those community events we often hear: “Wow, we made all the blankets already? Time really flew by! Are you having another blanket tying event? We’d like to join in again! This is a lot of fun!” The most important part of the community’s group efforts is the chemotherapy patients who will benefit from these brand new fleece blankets. Even in the warmest of temperatures outdoors or even indoors, a terrible side effect of chemotherapy is being cold. These blankets will provide a patient with comfort and warmth. The blankets will not only warm their body but will also warm their hearts. Just by knowing someone they've never met took time and made them a blanket can turn their whole journey with this terrible disease around. Take a moment to check out Community Collaboration - working together for a worthy cause.
